by Michelle Bodnar

I once knew a man who kept his hands balled in tight fists, resting on the counter, white knuckles. But he was always composed. I asked him if his hands were weapons, and he replied that his hands had never been as dangerous as his tongue.

Then he winked at me.

When he spoke his words came from the collar of his shirt, quiet and easy, but always sparsely donated. He laughed a lot.

One night after watching him drink several beers from between his wrists I asked him what he was holding on to, and he said he didn't think that way. He thought more in terms of keeping.

"Isn't that the same thing?" I asked.

"It's elusive, I guess," he responded, slowly. "I’ve never owned it."
